Upcoming presidential election in Russia and Putin 4.0 System

The Russian presidential election will take place in a month, but the winner is already clear. The only candidate capable of receiving wider support from voters, Alexey Navalny, has been banned from registering as a candidate due to his criminal record, stemming from a fraud conviction he views as illegitimate. Accordingly, the question now is not about what kind of elections these will be, but what they will mean for Vladimir Putin’s fourth term. In other words, what will the Putin 4.0 system look like? What challenges will it face? […]

Apathy of Russian society: can the youth change it?

The results of the elections to the Russian Duma, which took place on 18th September, showed that voters have an apathetic attitude towards the situation in the country, and do not cultivate any warm feelings for the ruling United Russia Party. President Vladimir Putin‘s party secured a win, yet voter activity reached a record low especially in the capital Moscow, where voter turnout was less than 35% (actually believed to be even lower). The elections unfortunately indicate something else – that the opposition has completely lost its connection with wider society. Not one credible critic of the Kremlin made it into the Duma. Neither representatives of the opposition nor civil society activists have hitherto managed to unite and mobilise the disillusioned against the kleptocracy. […]

The Savchenko swap: Why did Putin really free Ukraine’s most famous pilot?

Vladimir Putin’s decision to pardon Nadezhda Savchenko was a purely pragmatic one. Left with no viable alternatives to freeing the Ukrainian pilot, Putin was forced to make a concession that may not sit well with the Russian population, which has come to see Savchenko as a symbol of the “Kiev junta.” […]

Opinion: I am a victim of Russia’s kleptocracy

It is easy to list what Russia needs to put in place for its economy to grow successfully over the long-term and for its citizens to improve their lives: secure property rights, protection for investors, reliable commercial courts and significantly reduced volumes of regulation. Instead of strangling business at every opportunity and bending it to its will, the state should allow business to develop freely within the bounds of the law. […]

Putin’s Russia. The dangerous illusion of independent and western oligarchs

I decided to dedicate one more essay in the “Putin’s Russia” series to Russian oligarchs because of one piece of news that attracted much less attention in Lithuania and internationally than it warranted: the former foreign minister of Sweden and one of the fiercest critics of President Valdimir Putin, Carl Bildt, accepted a consulting job at LetterOne, a Luxembourg-based company set up and run by Russian oligarchs. […]

Opinion: The Russians are coming to occupy the Baltic states

I purposefully chose a title for my piece to evoke the notorious phrase from 1949 by the then US Secretary of Defense, James Forrestal: “The Russians are coming. The Russians are coming. They’re right around. I’ve seen Russian soldiers.” […]

Opinion: Khodorkovsky’s speech in Vilnius or prudence vs. clatter of dreamers

Mikhail Khodorkovsky’s visit in Vilnius has triggered a wave of emotional reactions that seem to have overwhelmed the critical thinking faculties and political sense of angry observers. Absolutely scandalous – Khodorkovsky dared not to say that he would immediately give back Crimea if he became Russia’s leader! […]
