It is fascinating and scaring for a foreigner living in Lithuania, to se how such a mob can be alerted. People who are "sure" they know the truth after watching a few TV-shows. In who´s interest - definitely not the young girl! The only natural thing is, of course, to bring the girl to her mother and hope that the grandparents have not been able to completely destroy the young girl´s future life.

Sir, maybe you are right. But Laimute was accused in a pedophilia case...and maybe, just maybe...she is guilty. Can you really be sure that justice is served? This is a story with 2 murdered people, ( maybe 3-take a looh to Drasius Kedys pictures at the morgue. Do you think he died because he chocked to death? And the fractured leg?), an accused mother, maybe a molested child. Have you seen that the girl was taken by force? Of course she was rushed out in mom and lawyers arms!! She didn't want to leave!! Caged or not, she does not know her mother, she hates her mother..and that should be enough...If she hates her now she will hate her tomorrow , too. I think is strange that her mother wanted soooooo bad to be with her daughter......Maybe she is guilty. Maybe she is afraid that the girl can talk, or recognise other people involved. Maybe they are both a living target. Did you think about that, sir? Only looking at the girl screaming...should be enough....Is this your kind of justice? Do you think the child is sane now? Or happy? They are in a secret location, protected by the police 24-7....wow....what a life for a loving mom and her child. Does Laimute Stankunaite have a job? A home? Did you ask yourself that? She is hidding, she is protected by the police, she had a bullett proof jacket on, she is alone, she was accused, she was in danger to be killed.....but...wow, what a devoted mom she is, fighting for her daughter!!! Pedophile involved mom, molested child, unhappy child, child driven to insanity....BUT JUSTICE HAS BEEN SERVED!! BY ANY COSTS!!! Sleep well and before that take a good look to all the film taken with DEimantele...when her mother wanted to take her...and see how quiet she was when she was with her whole family: grandparents and aunt. Have a nice day!

News flash Chicago !

The gathered heads of state of NATO member nations were reportedly very impressed by the street level display of Lithuanias newest armament system. The battleship "Garliavos Histerikai" made the transatlantic journey from Garliava to the Chicago hamlet of Lemont in record time. The new battleships Captain, Kaimo Jurgis, deployed its primary weapon to the disdain of, well, everybody as several trispalve garbed Lithuanian kamikazes took to throwing themselves under the wheels of President Grybauskaites moving motorcade.

A German military attache, while rolling his eyes and shaking his head remarked: "Well, I guess thats one way of getting yourself noticed. Not sure if its the best way but the battleship "Garliavos Histerikai" was rumored to act on threats in bizarre ways."

"Third world countries"? What arrogance!! You need to wake up and see the industrial and economic might of the new Asian tigers, India and China. And yes, we provide most of the IT professionals and expertise you need so much. This is because the citizens of these so called "third world" nations struggle to educate themselves, against the backdrop of grinding poverty and hopelessness. What many so called European leaders have failed to see, in their smugness and arrogance, and their inbuilt sense of their own superiority and infallibility, is that the balance of trade, power and technology are shifting towards the East. It is not infeasible that in the year 2050, Europeans will be producing cheap goods for Chinese consumption, which would be poetic justice, of the kind I enjoy.

Lithuania is paying the price of premature EU membership which has made the country a source for cheap labor for western European economies. Lithuania should have waited to reach a level of economic strength compatible with western economies first and then entered EU.
Lithuanians have been misled by the western powers for their own self interest of isolating Russia and making sure that their military forces have a presence at the doorstep of Russia.
I am an American but feel eomotional connection with Lithuania and therefore feel sad to see this downward spiral which Lithuania is caught in. People there are desparate to survive and are prepared to go to any lengths for that. There are numerous Lithuanians working all sorts of jobs illegally in USA and are getting exploited here, in addition to flooding western Europe and getting exploited there as well.
No proud Lithuanian should abandon their homeland at this critical juncture but stick it out and develop the country. This will discourage large scale invasion by immigrants from Turkey and other north African and some Asian countries which has in itself another disastrous consequence for Lithuanian culture and society.

Don't be ridiculous. Warsaw (read: Tusk) is in fact in cahoots with Moscow, and Berlin, but do suggest that Tusk is somehow a fried of Poland is ridiculous. Most citizens nowadays loathe the man. If some kind of Molotov-Ribbentrop pact were to be put in place, however figuratively that is meant, it will happen at the price of Polish sovereignty and independence (beyond the already pitiful vassal status within the EU) in the hands of a traitor -- Tusk. The way the Smolensk affair was handled along with recent developments in Poland is enough to demonstrate the wrong direction everything is headed, from worsening primary education to increasing bureaucracy to retirement and so on. It's time citizens of both countries felt a certain appropriate solidarity with one another in light of their increasing domination by foreign powers yet again. Freedom is a thing requiring constant struggle. It is not enough to cheer as we did in1989 and sigh in relief as if the hard work were over. It's just begin.

"The higher consumption rate at the end of last year and at the beginning of this year has resulted from a moderate increase in the number of employed persons, a gradual rise in wages and the consequent improvement of the population’s expectations."

Given that a friend of mine, a graduate in business studies, was recent offered employment by a high end retailer in Vilnius, the kind of shop where wealthy women shop for themselves and wealthy men shop for their mistresses, I was amused to discover that the remuneration offered was one-fifth of that she would have been offered in the UK. Given that the goods being sold in the Vilnius shop were the same price as those sold in expensive shops in London, I wondered who was actually benefitting from this resurgence in consumer confidence.

This brings shame on Lithuania, just like several other displays of homophobia. With the widespread homophobia Lithuania places itself firmly in the East European cultural sphere, reproducing Soviet mentality, and prejudice that's not based neither on science nor on true religion.

A Christian could argue against gay marriage and adoption with the Bible in his hand, but the Bible, especially the New Testament, does not provide for violence or bullying. The Bible has several warnings against judging others, and it could certainly be argued that behavior (of Petras Gražulis) as described in this article is definitely not good moral or Christian behavior. Also homophobia and prejudice against ethnic minorities trigger emigration, further adding to the demographic problems of Lithuania and other East European countries.

There seems to be a widespread idea that homosexuality is a modern West European invention. It's not. We've seen it in all urbanized places, like in old Greece or India, and today's modern world.

One of Lithuanian commentators compared the custody battle for the girl in Garliava with the Arab-Israeli conflict in the Middle East... It is almost impossible to solve. On the morning on 17 May the police took the girl to her mother. Is this the end of the big story or the beginning of something bigger in Lithuania?

US lecturers on economy? Professors of economics? Heads of higher education? Hummm?

http://www.usdebtclock.org/

That is the debt-clock of a bankrupt country!
A time bomb that will blow off any day now!
Yeah, they can teach you how to get bankrupt!

"...The heads of higher education institutions admit that the experience gained from their foreign colleagues is priceless..."

I really would like to ask how did they get such high opinion about those professors?
THE USA IS TECHNICALLY BANKRUPT!

In England, regardless of a childs ethnic background, the language of instruction is English; Wales has provision for education in Welsh, and Scotland has its own education system: but even in Welsh or Gaelic (Scotland) speaking areas English is still a compulsory subject. Why? because English is the majoritory language of the United Kingdom but Welsh and Gaelic are indigenous languages, Cornish also comes into this group but is not taught in schools (in Cornwall) due to low number of people who speak the language; this situation would have to be reviewed if there was a revival of the language, in which case it would be the responsibility of the English education system.

The situation in Lithuania and Poland is different, you are not dealing with indigenous languages but with ethnic minorities who, for one reason or another, have found themselves living somewhere where the majority language is different to their mother tongue. In the 1990's a solution was in place, however, about twenty years later an appraisal is required to see how the system is working. Read "D. Lavrinovic: you have to learn the Lithuanian language", at seventeen he was fluent in Polish and Russian, but he went to school in Lithuania! He's in his twenties so he was probably born in what was the Lithuanian SSR and educated through the transition of the education system. The fact that he learnt Lithuanian after leaving school suggests to me that the system needs revision. If Lithuania and Poland are teaching the ethnic minorites they inherited at the fall of the Soviet Union somewhere in the region of 50% in their mother tongue then they are both doing well and long may it continue. To be clear about the EU, it does not dictate on what are official languages or on education systems within EU member states.

The Human Rights issue. At the moment the UK has no language requirement for immigrants, hence there are people who have lived here for decades who don't speak English. Although there is no offical school leaving test, your GCSE English grade is taken as an indication of your command of the language and will have an affect on your career options. Other countries view fluency in their offical languages differently, as a citizen of an EU member country I would be entitled to live and work in either Lithuania or Poland and if there is a requirement by either to attend language classes then that's what I would have to do: I cannot use what happens in the UK as an excuse or claim that it is a violation of human rights.

Personal names: Lithuanians and Poles came to the UK after WW2, letters such as 'Š' and 'Ł' don't occur in the English alphabet, neither do surnames have masculine or feminine endings. They had to adapt, although today as most official documents are computer generated I see no reason why names cannot appear as an 'official version' and an 'ethnic version'. Instead of point scoring, work together to find a solution.

In the UK, immigrants and other minorities usually join the main established political parties (Consevative, Labour, Liberal Democrat), those such as the British National Party which claims to represent the views of the 'indigenous' people, that is to say, nationalist, have very little support. In Africa, political parties are based on tribal groupings, and we can all see the result. In both Lithuania and Poland ethnic minority interest would be best served by joining the main political parties instead of forming minority interests groups. In a democracy you are elected to represent all of your constituents and in a broader sense, the interest of the State, how can you do this if you just focus on your own ethnic group or feel your loyalty lies with a neighbouring country?
