On 11 March, 2011 (on the Day of Restoration of Lithuania’s Independence) the extreme right and neo-Nazi skinheads marched down the main street of Vilnius, Gediminas avenue, hailing racists and xenophobic slogans such as “Lithuania for Lithuanians”, “For Lithuania, the nation and the race”, “We are white brothers” and other. The participants of the march demonstrated hatred towards non-Lithuanians, wore military symbols and uniforms, were behaving aggressively towards peaceful protesters. Such marches which take place annually on this very day, despite the protests from fascism-opposing NGOs, have received little attention from public officials (who thus unwillingly tolerate the spread of hatred banned by Law in Lithuania); during a similar march in 2008 the slogans included „Juden raus” and “Lithuania is beautiful without Russians” which already tarnished Lithuania’s democratic credentials. This year’s march has had even bigger impetus, saw a growing number of participants and has generated even more vicious hatred by linking up ethnic hatred with the call for the anti-democratic cause.  And yet these public outbursts of fascism have not received a rebuke from the public institutions (only an advisor to the Prime Minister has publicly expressed his indignation).

It is obvious that the lack of response in the situation where the extreme right and neo-Nazis are becoming ever more vociferous and threatening creates doubts in the minds of many wondering whether the silence from governmental institutions and society means also their tacit support for the views purveyed by the extreme right which attempts to highjack the concept of patriotism and thus demean Lithuania’s statehood and democracy that this National Day stands for. The fact that the public institutions remain silent in the face of the surge of neo-Nazism who are openly showing their contempt for the constitutional foundations of the state and expressing as their aim to take down the democratic government; one of the banners carried by the neo-Nazis proclaimed „Today – street, tomorrow – Seimas – the year 1926“ referring to the coup d’état which turned down the democratic government in 1926 and installed the autocratic regime of Antanas Smetona which effectively led to the end of democratic society and Independence.

In order to resist such growing manifestations of racism and xenophobia it is imperative for public institutions and the highest officials of our democratic state to clearly distance themselves from this march and condemn it in the most public and official way, thus clearly and unequivocally expressing their position on these public expressions of hatred and calls for anti-democratic causes.

Thereby we urge the President, the Parliament and the Government of the Republic of Lithuania to take action today – to condemn and distance themselves from the march of the extreme right and neo-Nazis which took place on 11 March, 2011 with the aim to:

1.Publicly and bravely express democratic values, tolerance and respect for the human rights which are safe-guarded by the Constitution of Lithuania and many international treaties, by demonstrating that racism and xenophobia are not compatible with the values of democratic and enlightened society and, first and foremost, with the vision of the future of Lithuania;

2.Express respect and endorse the foreign visitors in Lithuania and all those foreigners and/or people of foreign descent living or staying in Lithuania, who are frightened and offended by the adversary slogans and views of the extreme right and neo-Nazis;

3.Distance from the actions of Kazimieras Uoka, Member of Parliament and a member of the governing party Union of Fatherland – Lithuanian Christian Democrats was participating in the march and endorsing its participants – this parliamentarian is discrediting both the ruling party and the Parliament he is a member of;

4.Demonstrate that the Day of Restoration of Lithuania’s Independence and the governmental institutions of the Republic of Lithuania have nothing in common with the xenophobic and racist ideas manifested during this march and that the suspicions raised by the international community that purveyors of such views are harboured in Lithuania are totally unsound.

By distancing themselves in person and ex officio the President, the Members of Parliament and the Members of Government would send out a clear signal to both society at home and the international community at large demonstrating that democratic views and values are cherished and protected in Lithuania.
