Review of cargo handling in Klaipėda and other Eastern Baltic sea ports

In eleven month of this year Klaipėda Port handled 28,5 million tons of marine cargo, the total cargo handling growth made 13,7 % if to compare with the corresponding period of the previous year, Klaipeda Port press office reported.
 
According to cargo handling turnover Klaipėda Port still remains ahead of neighbouring Riga and Ventspils Ports and gets behind only to Joined Tallinn Port.

The highest increase in cargo turnover during ten month of this year comparing with the corresponding period of 2009 was reached due to increased handling volumes of natural and chemical fertilizers (+1 768,0 thousand tons), Ro – Ro cargo (+1 004,3) thousand tons), containerized cargo (+700, 3 thousand tons), minerals and construction materials.  ( +593,7 thousand tons).

 
In terms of cargo groups the handling volumes of general cargo were handling reached up to 8  873,4  thousand tons (31,2 percent of general port handling) increased mostly (27,7 percent). Dry and bulk cargo handling increased by 25,2 percent, volumes of this cargogroup were 10 734,6  thousand tons (37,7 percent). The handling of liquefied cargo decreased by 6,9 percent, in total 8 870,3  thousand tons (31,1 percent) were handled.
 
In January – November of this year 6 399 ships. i.e. less by 6,2 percent or by 423 ships, comparing to the corresponding period of the previous year,called Klaipėda Port. The number of passengers equalled up to 302,8 thousand, i.e. more by 17,8 percent comparing with the corresponding period of 2009.
 
Klaipėda Port has further maintained its position of the leading Port in containerized cargo handling. 276 818  TEU, i.e. more by 20,3 percent comparing to the correspondingperiodof 2009 ( the increase made45 197  TEU) were handled in Klaipėda Port in January – November of 2010.
