The Secretary General of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation Mindaugas Balciunas has said that his country would be teaming up with Estonia and Latvia in a bid to host the 2018 FIBA World Championship.

“The federation should strive to hold this tournament in Lithuania at an even higher level than it did with the European championship. By joining forces with Latvia and Estonia, we could compete for the right to host the 2018 World Championship,” Balciunas said in an ITAR-TASS article published by

The Secretary General’s comments refer to the fact that Lithuania will be hosting next year’s European Basketball Championship, better known as EuroBasket 2011.

A FIBA representative said that it would be possible to talk about holding the championship in Lithuania once the upcoming European championship is over.

The FIBA World Championship is held once every four years. This year Turkey hosted the event, and in 2014 it will be held in Spain.
