Students of Šiauliai Didždvaris Gymnasium are against the changes in the canteen
Šiauliai Municipality‘s expense cuts displeased students of Didždvaris Gymnasium. Having returned from the winter holidays, they discovered that canteen‘s menu has changed significantly. Due to Šiauliai Municipality‘s decision to save public funds at the expense of the schools, the canteen has been taken over by a new owner.
Didždvaris Gymnasium has signed a contract with a firm Kretingos Maistas, which resulted in a 20-40% price increase. „Buns are hard, cookies taste like plastic, what kind of healthy food promotion in schools we can speak of?“, school-leaver Eglė expressed her discontent.
Gymnasium‘s students have started a signature collection campaign against the changes. According to the campaign‘s initiator, Didždvaris Students‘ Union Representative Raigardas, the campaign is aimed at bringing Kretingos Maistas‘ attention to the students‘ opinion. „The idea came up spontaneously and received strong support, the students approved our decision to collect signatures and to hand it to the canteen‘s managers“, another member of the Students‘ Union shared his thoughts. Students have already collected over 200 signatures.
Gymnasium‘s principal has appraised the initiative and promised to consider the issue.
