Chief of Police — we were informed that the boy may blow himself up, but it was too late

On the night of 6 January, a girl called to the Emergency Response Centre, who told that her boyfriend  is intending to commit suicide. This happened straight away after the capital was shaked by a powerful explosion on the Tauras hill. ‘She said her boyfriend has left the house and threatened to commit suicide.  However, it was too late, the explosion had already happened’, – said Kęstutis Lančinskas, the  Chief of Vilnius Police Headquarters.

As the report about the explosion was received, police patrols were searching Vilnius centre, old town, Antakalnis district to identify the location.  When the mentioned girl called to Emergency Response Centre, the search field of the officers narrowed. ‘She indicated the place where the boy loved to visit’, – told the police chief of the capital.

In the disaster, which shocked the whole country, died a 19 year old Kaunas inhabitant G.T. ‘The initial data shows that the man died from the explosive device, made on his own. We do not have any negative information about him so far’, — said K. Lančinskas. The explosive device was powerful as the part of the windows in the trade-union‘s building broke. The parts of the explosive devise, found in the place of the incident, were given to chemical examination. Its origin will emerge as the experts will give their conclusions.

Various version are being investigated, however the pre-trial investigation was initiated on murder.

It is suspected that the boy could decide to end his life because of unfortunate love.

The version, that the young man could be induced to commit suicide, is not denied.

‘It is too early to speak about the versions’ – emphasized the head of officers in the capital.

Ruslanas Boiko, General prosecutor, said he cannot reveal yet whether any suspects were arrested or any searches conducted. A large part of Police force was designated to investigate the incident.
