Dual Citizenship saga ends; Lithuanian Diaspora disappointed

Seimas has accepted presidential amendments and adopted the new version of Law on Citizenship which did not expand the Lithuanian dual Citizenship boundaries.  Only those Lithuanians who left Lithuania before March 11 1990, the Restoration of Independence, those who got it by birth, through marriage, and those exceptional cases provided by the law fits into the dual citizenship criteria.

Previously, Seimas wanted to expand the Lithuanian dual citizenship include those Lithuanian’s who acquired the citizenship of an EU or NATO country after the Restoration of Independence on 11 March 1990, but President Dalia Grybauskaite vetoed it.

A long saga of the broader Lithuanian citizenship that lasted since 2006 has ended unchanged.  It is apparent that only a referendum on a broadened Lithuanian dual citizen could move this question towards one of another direction now.
