Naismith‘s grandson; Original Rules of Basketball must be in Lithuania

The Original Rules of Basketball go on auction at Sotheby’s in New York December 10th this year.  Ian Naismith, the grandson of Dr. James A. Naismith, the father of basketball, is convinced that the Original Rules of Baskeball must find its place in Lithuania, which could become the Mecca of baskeball.

“Basketball is an Endeavor that brings a community together.  Dr. James Naismith would be amazed and proud of how the people of Lithuania have  embraced his creation.  I believe it is as much a part of the spirit and  soul of the country as it is any where else on earth.  Lithuania would  instantly become the Mecca of the entire sports world should the “Rules” find a home there.  My grandfather would smile and bless the  place that so  carries the game in its heart, that they honored it by making the Original Rules part of their national treasures,” Ian Naismith said to the Lithuania Tribune.

‚Perhaps no other nation on earth has as part of it spirit and soul the game of basketball as does Lithuania,’  The Lithuania Tribune reader Mike LaChapelle said in his letter.  According to the New York Times Sotheby’s expects it to sell for at least $2 million.
