Lithuania and Belarus to build a joint LNG

Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius indicated that Lithuania is ready to increase its economic cooperation with Belarus.  The officials in Minsk answered with the same.  Kubilius, during his trip to Minsk, spoke to the officials in Minsk about the possibility of building a joint Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal in Klaipeda.  Belarus also spoke about building a pipeline from port city Klaipeda to Belarus, connecting the two countries.

‘We agreed that a joint task force could revise the common project idea. Belarus needs an alternative gas supply. This is important not only for Belarus, but for the entire region, and therefore, after analyzing the future possibilities, we will decide about developing such a terminal,’ Kubilius said to the Baltic News Service agency.

Kubilius, during opening of the OMA centre of building building centre in Minsk, has also voiced his hope that Lithuania will become a ‘reliable bridge for the expansion of the Nordic capital into neighbouring countries’.

During his meeting with the opposition leaders Kubilius revealed that he was surprised with an emotional President Lukashenko’s reaction when Kubilius touched upon the topic of human rights in Belarus.

Lithuanian Minister of Energy Arvydas Sekmokas stated that an LNG terminal could be built in Klaipeda by year 2012.
