Parliament delays decision on citizenship debate

The Seimas has again put off making a decision on the controversial ammendments to the country’s citizenship law.

Parliament needs to decide whether they will allow citizens of Lithuania to hold dual citizenship with other countries. Currently dual citizenship is spelled out in the constitution as an exception that can only be granted in particular circumstances by the decree of the president.

The issue has been raging for years and many who live in the country’s diaspora want a resolution to the problem, which is denying them citizenship to the country of their parents or grandparents.

The Seimas will now have until Jan. 1, 2011 to vote on the ammendments. Parliament reasoned that they would need more time for the legal committee tasked with improving the law to hand down their recommendations.

One hundred and three members of the Seimas voted to extend the deadline on the bill and one abstained. If they had not voted on the extention, it would have been called on July 1.

The bill aims to “ensure more consistent and clear legal and technical requirements dealing with the cases where a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania can be combined with other nationality.”
