Frank Zappa leaves Vilnius for Baltimore
The sculpture of American artist Frank Zappa, created by Lithuanians, is being taken to Zappa‘s hometown, Baltimore in US. The idea to present the bust of the famous rock musician to the city was hatched several years ago and will be fulfilled in the coming month.
“It is very pleasant today to wish Frank a good trip together with all friends of his. He is coming back to his hometown, Baltimore, where he will reside in a park near the library. It is a great place for an open-minded personality,” said US ambassador to Lithuania Anne Derse on Friday.
One of the authors of the idea photographer Saulius Paukstys rejoiced that the idea has finally turned into a “nice, important event, which will make Lithuania’s and Vilnius’ names famous in the world.”
Vilnius’ deputy mayor Gintautas Babravicius was happy that Lithuania can make such a gift to United States. “I am really joyful about the city’s government, both current and former, which has supported this crazy idea. At last Lithuania can make a gift to United States too,” Babravicius said.
The copy of the original bust, which is standing in central Vilnius, was made two years ago with the thought of bringing it to Baltimore. Zappa, weighing more than a tone, will be taken to US by a sea transport by UPS company. “Our mission is simple – this is not even close to the risks that were taken by French, when they presented the Liberty sculpture to US,” said UPS representative to Lithuania Vladas Lasas.
It is planned that Zappa will reach its hometown within a month. The opening of the bust will take place in Baltimore on 18 of September.
The idea to build a monument to Frank Zappa in Vilnius was born in 1995. In a year, the bust of the rock musician was opened, and in a decade, the artists decided that the copy of it has to appear in Baltimore.
The author of the bust is Konstantinas Bodganas, and the architect – Valdas Ozarinskas.
