Balts, Poland and Finland confirm political will with Rail Baltica

On 8 June the representatives Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Poland have signed a memorandum of understanding regarding further implementation of the European-gauge railway project Rail Baltica.  The ceremony took place in the Spanish city of Zaragoza during the EU transport ministers’ meeting.

The memorandum states that Lithuania, instead of building a single-tack line is going to build a double-track line from Poland to Kaunas.  By signing this memorandum Lithuania has confirmed its commitment to implement all scheduled ‘Rail Baltica’ works that have been agreed in the Lithuania’s government’s action plan on time. “This means that the project continues. The current memorandum sets out what each country will do,” Lithuanian Deputy Transport Minister Arunas Staras told Baltic News Service.

It is calculated that the implementation of the project in Lithuania alone will cost around 1.95 bln Litas.  Lithuania will allocate some 770 mln Litas.  The Deputy Transport Minister also acknowledged that the Estonians are being ahead in implementing Rail Baltic project.
