Reforming the Pension Age in Estonia: The People’s Union Said No

After a very small Easter break, the People’s Union party met on Monday for discussing and adopting a statement against the plan of the Government of rising the pension age.

“Rising of the pension age in a crisis situation is intolerable and not warranted for several reasons” was the comment from People’s Union. “to pressure the Riigikogu to decide to raise the pension age in a situation where the life expectancy of our people and the years lived healthily are among the lowest in Europe is a sign of lack of caring.”

The leaders of the political party also criticized the decision taken by the ruling coalition forces – Reform Party and PRU – by saying that they both lack the mandate of the people to perform such a dramatic reform as shifting the retirement age to 65years old would be.

An obstacle to the reform, then, is also the impact this would have on the field of social security and welfare, since an increase of the pension age would need further reforms for improving individuals’ health and extend life expectancy.

“This move will also require drafting a comprehensive package of social welfare measures. A thorough analysis on the possible consequences and a public debate involving all stakeholder groups need to precede the decision to raise the pension age – only then can a justified and carefully considered decision be made,” said the statement approved by People’s union.

The best solution then it would be, cloning the words coming from the opposition, to retire the proposition and forget about retirement age – but, now, the ball is back to the Government.
