Lithuania set to have LNG terminal

Energy Minister Arvydas Sekmokas confirmed that Lithuania is determined to build a liquefied gas terminal (LNG) on its territory.  During the Government’s meeting on 29 March he also stated that Klaipedos Nafta is considered to be the only one suitable place for the LNG terminal.

‘We will certainly build a terminal in Lithuania – we cannot depend on someone’s plans, which might not be implemented at all.  Lithuania consumes a significantly larger amount of gas than Latvia and Estonia,’ Sekmokas said to the reporters after meeting.

‘At the moment we have only one gas supplier without a choice, therefore we are paying one of the highest prices in Europe.  The construction of a liquefied gas terminal is of the immediate importance and we are planning to implement it independently in order to secure a reliable supply,’ Sekmokas said.

According to the Minister it should take from two to three years to build a small size LNG terminal.

The Estonians also announced last week about their plans to construct an LNG terminal on Pakri peninsula near the town of Paldiski.  In December 2009 the Lithuanians announced that the Baltic States might build a single LNG terminal for all three courtiers.  The European Commission is ready to contribute to an LNG financially.  However, it indicated that the Baltic States need only one LNG terminal.
