PM-Lithuania not to participate in Kaliningrad’s N-Plant project
Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius confirmed to his Russian counterpart that Lithuania will not participate in Russia’s Kaliningrad nuclear power plant project. A. Kubilius had an opportunity to inform about this directly to the Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin during their meeting in Moscow on 26 March.
“We said very clearly that we are not planning to take part in the construction of the Kaliningrad nuclear plant, as we are in the process of constructing our own,” Kubilius said after meeting the Putin. He also added, “I expressed our concern over the nuclear plant which is to rise in Kaliningrad as well as certain ecological issues it raises. We agreed that these concerns would be addressed and given consideration.”
The Russian Prime Minister Putin promised that all apprehensions will be answered. “I heard some concerns from our certain colleagues about the development of nuclear energy in Russia’s north-western stretch, more precisely in Kaliningrad. We are ready to discuss this and provide requisite explanations to whatever questions,” Putin said.
The Russians claim that the first unit of the new nuclear plant in Kaliningrad will be operational by 2016 and the second by 2018.
