Ignalina Power PlantLithuania’s president Grybauskaite warned that those who held-up the arrangements for the closure of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant will be held responsible and will have to face consequences.  The president said to the public broadcaster on 9 December, ‘After the closure of the facility I will demand an examination of the whole process of shutdown and all those who acted negligently thus delaying this shutdown process will have to assume responsibility’.

Nevertheless, Grybauskaite, who was visiting the plant today, said that after closure of Ignalina Lithuanian will still remain a nuclear state. ‘Lithuania will step into a new historic stage – it will bid farewell to its old nuclear power plant and, as I believe, will start the construction of a new one shortly. The President expressed her hope that Lithuania will begin to construct a new nuclear plant ‘In about three years’ time, four years at the latest.’  Today, Lithuania announced a public tender process to find an investor to the new plant’s construction.  The old Ignalina plant, which is 30 years old, will have to be shut down at the end of this year.
