Seimas votes to cut their own expense accounts
After long discussions Seimas members voted to reduce their parliamentary expense accounts, which will come into effect from Jan. 1, 2010.
Until then, the parliamentarians get 3,200 Litas per month to spend as they please. From next year, their expense accounts will be reduced to 2,100 Litas. All 76 parlamentarians, who took part in the session Thursday morning, voted for the changes.
The expenses are reduced temporarily due to recession. The changes will hold until Jan 2011.
The changes will save 1,681 million Litas for the state budget during 2010.
After the recession began a year ago, the scandals of parlamentarians, spending thousands of Litas on renting luxurious automobiles or buying designer suits from their expense accounts have been aroused a few times.
