Lithuania will not host Guantanamo inmates until CIA prison suspicions are cleared

GuantanamoLithuania’s zeal to host the Guntanamo inmates in Lithuanian is fading away.  The Lithuanian President announced today that Lithuania will not host a prisoner from Guantanamo until the suspicions regarding presence of the CIA secret prison in Lithuanian are cleared.

The President said to the journalists after her first visit to the National Security Department, which lasted more that three hours ‘The conclusions suggest that risks for Lithuania and insecurity would grow.’

However, the main reason behind this decision lies elsewhere.  On 20 the ABC News on its web site has reported about a secret CIA prison on Lithuanian territory. Five days later the Russian State run Russia Today broadcasted a report in which claimed that the CIA facility was located in Rudininkai near Vilnius.

All key Lithuanian official vigorously denied those allegations as rumours and fantasies and maintained that no such facilities were stationed on Lithuanian territory.  The Lithuanians authorities asked the Americans to provide with information about the case but the ABC Network refused to do so and claimed that they are standing firmly behind their words.

It seems that Grybauskaite decided to pass the ball to the Washington’s court.  Meanwhile she said to the journalists ‘Let me put it very clearly – until the suspicion of possible CIA prisons is suspended above Lithuania, I will definitely not agree to hosting a prisoner because this would constitute increased and additional risks upon Lithuania on the international arena.’
