President – Lithuania sold USD 1.5 b of bonds, will not apply for IMF help
The Lithuanian Grybauskaite has confirmed that Lithuanian government has successfully sold a bond issue worth 1.5 bln United States Dollars (USD). The President confirmed this during her trip to Finland on 7 October 2009.
It was confirmed to the BNS by the presidential spokesmen Balsys who said to the agency ‘President Dalia Grybauskaite has assured the Finnish prime minister in Helsinki that Lithuania will have no need to turn to the IMF [for help] because the successful placement in international markets of 1.5 billion US dollars worth of securities will enable Lithuania to stabilize its finances on its own, provided that the policy of saving and rational structural reforms is continued.’
However, this announcement has caused some confusion in Vilnius since assistant to the Finance Minister informed BNS that she was not aware on what basses Grybauskaite communicated this information. The Minister of Finance Simonyte went to London to meet the potential investors for the bonds yesterday.
If the reports will be confirmed it would be relief for the Lithuanian Government, since it appears that Latvia is getting into even a deeper financial troubles.
