Will Lithuania build a new nuclear power station?

Last week Lithuania’s President has surprised many by questioning Lithuania’s resolve to build a new Nuclear Plant in Ignalina many in Lithuania.  She said on July 30 press conference that Lithuania should calculate before deciding whether or not to build a new nuclear power plant.  She stated that it might turn out that Lithuanian will not need the Nuclear Plant, since the neighbouring countries are planning to build two nuclear plants next to Lithuania.

Furthermore, the President stated that it could be more feasible to invest into the green energy instead.  However, she admitted that Lithuania is not ‘pulling out of the project’.

Lithuanian experts concluded that Kaliningrad region does not need a Nuclear Plant for its own needs.  According to them if the Nuclear plant in Kaliningrad will be build its electricity will be used for exports.  According to Delfi.lt after Kaliningrad’s Electrical Plant modernisation in 2016 it will be able to produce some 1.700 MW per year.  Kaliningrad region’s needs by then, however, will be some 1.200 MW per year.  When the Baltiskaya Nuclear Plant will become fully operational the Kaliningrad region will have some 2.800 MW surpluses per year.

In regards to the usage of the green energy in Lithuania Mr Jonas Gylys, the director of the Energy Technology Institute in Kaunas has a different opinion.  According to him the energy produced by the green technologies could satisfy only 20 or 30 percent of Lithuania’s energy needs.  He called the green energy a luxury which only rich countries could afford.
