The Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis met the Afghan Minister of Foreign Affairs Zalmai Rassoul in Vilnius on Tuesday. The Ministers discussed the bilateral economic and political relations, development cooperation and the security situation in Afghanistan and the neighbouring countries.
According to Mr. Ažubalis, the bilateral cooperation between the two countries is intensifying. Lithuania initiated and, along with other donor countries, contributed financially to the implementation of many important projects including the construction of the day care centre in Chagcharan and the reconstruction of streets and the air port’s runway.
The Minister said that Lithuania will continue to support Afghanistan’s reconstruction and encourages the transfer of responsibility to ensure security in Ghor province to the Afghan National Security Forces.
Mr. Ažubalis encouraged Afghanistan to develop bilateral relations with other countries in the region and emphasized that Lithuania is ready to share its experience in regional cooperation with the Baltic and Nordic countries.
An international conference Afghanistan and Its Neighbourhood: Towards Regional Cooperation takes place in Vilnius on 19 September.
The conference will focus on the promotion of regional cooperation and the creation of regional networks. The conference will be attended by high officials, diplomats, independent experts and scholars.
