On 13 August an official ceremony took place at the military base of the Lithuanian Air Force. The deployment of the fourth Air Force Training Group (AFTG-4), which is a part of international mission led by Lithuania in Afghanistan, was celebrated. The AFTG-4 will have to train helicopter pilots and military personnel of the Afghan forces.
Among the members of the newly-formed AFTG-4 are eight Lithuanians and one Latvian serviceman. They will be joined by Belgian and Ukrainian soldiers in Afghanistan.
Similarly to the previous groups, the AFTG-4 will be deployed in Kandahar and will continue the training of the Afghan National Security Force’s (ANSF) helicopter pilots and military personnel. The training will provide them with professional and technical skills as well as knowledge necessary for operation planning.
The deployment of its AFTG is Lithuania’s contribution to the NATO-led mission carried out by International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). The ISAF is supporting the growth in capacity and capability of the ANSF and facilitating improvements in governance and socio-economic development in order to provide a secure environment for sustainable stability that is observable to the population.
The Lithuanian AFTG has been working in Afghanistan since February 2011.
