Lithuania welcomes Polish aspirations to develop missile defense, which could contribute to strengthening regional security.
“We congratulate Polish plans to develop missile defense capabilities, which may contribute to the strengthening of regional security. According to the Chicago meeting of the NATO summit decisions the Polish capacity with the input from other NATO countries could become an important step in the development of NATO anti missile and air defense systems”, says the commentary by Vytautas Umbrasas sent in by BNS, lrytas.lt reported on 8 August.
This week President of Poland Bronislaw Komorowski in his interview with the magazine Wprost said that the government proposed to create a missile shield to protect Poland from air strikes. Polish missile shield, according to B. Komorowski, can be plugged into the NATO missile defense system.
”We need to have such an integral part in the Poland’s defence system. Currently it does not make a lot of sense to provide a lot of funging for military equipment if it does not protect against the most typical and most threatening attack: an attack by missiles or air strikes”, said B. Komorowski.
Developing NATO missile defense system capabilities the U.S. plans in the future to deploy missile systems in Poland and Romania that are able to shoot down individual ballistic missiles.
The Americans claim that the following measures could protect from such countries as Iran, possibly seeking to develop a nuclear bomb.
However, Russia is not happy about these U.S. plans. It views NATO’s missile defense development as a threat to the country’s strategic nuclear arsenal. Meanwhile NATO categorically rejects such Russian fears.
