On 23 July, President Dalia Grybauskaite stated that it is beneficial for Lithuania to remain a country with nuclear energy, and Visaginas Nuclear Power plant would become an economy driver for the local region, Lrytas.lt portal reported.
“I think that it is beneficial for Lithuania in the next twenty to thirty years to have a source of nuclear energy in addition to alternative energy sources. Such project would be a huge force driving the local region economy”, said the President.
According to D. Grybauskaite, Government needs to provide detailed information to the public prior to consultative referendum which will be held on October 14th along with Seimas elections.
“To ensure that public could make a decision Government needs to do their homework, which means that public should be fully informed about the project including all the details”, said the President.
“There is too much speculation, plenty of misinformation. Government has a responsibility to correct all misinformation”, said D. Grybauskaite.
According to the President, Visaginas Nuclear Power plant project is “beneficial, but only if it is carried out transparently without any political intrigue”.
