Spring session ends, the Seimas to resume work in the Autumn

On Saturday the 30th of June, the Seimas finished the regular VIII (spring) session, which started on the 10th of March.  In its duration, the parliamentarians gathered in 56 plenary sessions and passed more than 200 legislations, 70 acts, and 10 resolutions delfi.lt reports.

In the spring session, as reported by the Public Relations Department of Seimas, special attention was paid to strengthening Lithuania’s energy independence, establishing more favourable environment for business development, issues of social security and pension system reform, unemployment reduction, financial stability, public sector transparency, and national security.

Other important acts adopted are related to Lithuania’s membership in the European Union and the implementation of the Constitutional Court’s rulings.   Annual reports of President Dalia Grybauskaitė and the Government were also heard during the session.

On the 16th of July, Speaker of the Seimas Irena Degutienė, in regard to the appeal by 55 MPs, convened the extraordinary Seimas session with a single issue in the agenda – the adoption of resolution regarding the referendum on the construction of a nuclear plant.

In the autumn, on the 10th of September, parliamentarians will meet on the last IX (autumn) session of 2008-2012 Seimas.

According to the Statute of the Seimas, MPs annually gather to two regular spring and autumn sessions. Spring session begins on the 10th March and ends on the 30th of June. Autumn session runs from the 10th of September till the 23rd of December.
