SPANISH ZARZUELA
Opening concert of the Christopher Summer Festival
Concert organized in cooperation with the EMBASSY OF SPAIN
Soloist OTILIO CASTRO (tenor, Dominican Republic)
Vilnius City Municipality ST. CHRISTOPHER CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
Conductor DONATAS KATKUS
The flamenco is, naturally, most representative of Spain, yet a no less impressive gift from this colourful country is the zarzuela – presented as part of the Christopher Summer Festival. The zarzuela is an unusual genre of the stage arts that appeared back in Baroque Spain, combining drama, music and dance. Having changed form over the years, now it is reminiscent of an operetta or musical, though with its Spanish spirit still in place. It is thought that the zarzuela was first performed in the Palacio de la Zarzuela, which has given it its name. While the palace itself got its name from the location, renowned for the brambles full of blackberries growing there (zarzas in Spanish)…
So, like a handful of summer’s most delicious berries, soloist Otilio Castro and the St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra shall treat audiences to the most beautiful Spanish melodies.
Programme – P. Sorozabal, J. Serr, P. Luna, A. Vives, etc.
