The Embassy of the United States of America is pleased to announce the visit of General William Fraser, Commander of United States Transportation Command, to Lithuania. This is General Fraser’s first visit to Lithuania, but his predecessor, General Duncan McNabb, was instrumental in the successful conclusion of long-term discussions between the governments of the United States and Lithuania, as well as commercial interests, on integrating Lithuania into Northern Distribution Network (NDN) to support ISAF forces in Afghanistan.
During this visit, General Fraser will be meeting with senior Lithuanian officials to continue to address ideas about making this route as effective as possible. The first of these cargo shipments to Afghanistan arrived in Klaipeda in December 2010.
The purpose of this visit is to express gratitude for the support of Lithuania in efforts to supply ISAF troops in Afghanistan via the Northern Distribution Network, as well as to include the supplies that will be departing Afghanistan in the near future, as we bring the war there to a close.
General Fraser’s visit will also serve to highlight how Lithuania remains an outstanding commercial and strategic partner for the United States.
The NDN is a critical series of rail, water and road links enabling transport of mission-essential materials to U.S. and NATO troops serving in Afghanistan that reduces the reliance on existing supply routes through Pakistan. This alternative logistical route also represents an opportunity to build a network of regional transportation links that could tremendously advance the economic development of Central and South Asia.
