Latvia would like to receive no more than 275 megawatts, or 20% of shares from the Visagina Nuclear Power plant, claims Chairman of the Board of Latvenergo Aris Zigurs.
The planned capacity of Visagina NPP is – 1350 megawatts. During the meeting of Prime Ministers of Baltic states a month ago, Prime Minister of Estonia Andrus Ansip claimed that Estonia has the rights for 300 megawatts. Lithuania is obliged to own 34% of shares by Law, which is around 460 megawatts. This means that if Poland wants to take part in this project, it will receive more than 300 megawatts of electrical energy.
Zigurs notes that Lithuania is the weakest Baltic country in terms of energy, and he positively evaluates the Visagina NPP project. But the fact that Lithuania rushes to make all possible agreements concerning the project as soon as possible, annoys their neighbors.
It is estimated that the construction of the Visagina NPP could dost around LVL 3.5 billion. According to Zigurs, Poland’s participation in this project was acceptable for all project participants, because the economies of Baltic countries are too small, and any sudden financial problems appearing during the construction period would be easily resolved if Poland would agree to participate in the project.
